This morning we took our 3 year old and 18 month old daughters to the park in the town centre to feed the myriad of ducks who like to gather there. They always choose the same particular spot by the river bank in the hope that a few generous passers-by will throw them a few titbits. As we walked together, the sun came out and all the leaves that are still left on the trees that line the main road into town were illuminated with reds, oranges, yellows, greens, golds and browns. The sky above was a clear blue dotted with a few token fluffy white clouds. It was also incredibly blustery. A perfect autumn day.
Hand in hand with the three year old, we walked in a companionable silence. I became lost in my own little world, thinking about all the things I needed to do once we got home from the park, mentally going through everything on the to-do list that is perpetually on my mind, completely oblivious to everything and everyone around me. My thoughts were interrupted by my daughter exclaiming excitedly ”Look Mummy! The leaves are dancing!”
I looked up, and sure enough, on the path in front of us, a small whirlwind of leaves were twirling and spinning as if in perfect hamony with each other. We stopped, and I watched the look of delight and wonder that spread across my daughter’s face as she gazed at the sight of the leaves ‘dancing’.
I think we can all learn something from this. I’ve learnt to appreciate the little things more. And, perhaps more importantly, I’ve learnt to open my eyes to what the world has to show me. I think from now on I’m going to be seeing a lot more ‘dancing leaves’.
