According to reputable sources (ahem, the internet) today is officially the ‘Day of Awesomeness’.
There are a lot of people out there doing a lot of awesome things.
Take this guy for example: http://www.thefreehelpguy.com/about/
A year ago he posted an advert on Gumtree offering free help…with absolutely anything. He didn’t think much would come of it, but he has been inundated with requests from people looking for help with all kinds of things – everything from learning a new language, to finding their way around a new city, to getting reunited with their long-lost father. He’s helped them all, and no request has been too big (or too small) for him to take on. Pretty awesome.
And these guys: http://www.suspendedcoffee.com.au/
A very simple, very awesome idea that’s catching on all over the world – if you are in a café getting yourself a coffee, pay for an extra one and request for it to be ‘suspended’. Anyone in need (and ‘in need’ can be a very subjective thing – it might be a homeless man who has been on the streets all night. It might be a father of three who has just lost his job and doesn’t know how he is going to support his family. It might be a single mum of an autistic child who is in desperate need of some company. Or a whole host of other examples…) can go into the café and ask for a suspended coffee, which they get for free. That free coffee might just be the difference that makes the difference in their day. Paying it forward one coffee at a time – awesome.
Oh, and this guy: http://www.jbjsoulkitchen.org/
I mean, everyone knows that Jon Bon Jovi is awesome anyway, but to use his fame and fortune to help out those less fortunate than him is incredibly awesome.
The thing is though, I think we are all awesome in some way – our own way I guess. We’re just ordinary people, but the little things we do each day are the things that make us extraordinary. Awesome, in fact.
These little things often go unrecognised if we look at the bigger picture – in the grand scheme of things we might not be changing the world. But we are making a difference on a smaller scale – individually, to our friends, to our family, to our community. I think that maybe if we add up all those little acts of awesomeness I think we’d find that the difference being made is bigger than we think.
Being awesome doesn’t mean going out to change the world (although that would be a very cool thing too!). Being awesome can be something as simple as staying up all night with a sick child. Or supporting a friend who is going through a relationship break-up. Or just being there for someone who is struggling. Or making a really great cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate. (All examples of things that the awesome people in my life have done for me, and all things that I have done for people I care about).
So, no matter where you are today, or what you’re doing, make it your mission to do it as awesomely as possible.
Because being awesome is something that we are all capable of naturally, if we let ourselves.
